Well, it's official. Whatever credibility Bush was hoping to hold out for his presidency has officially been thrown out the window. Yesterday Bush commuted the sentence of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby. Mind you, he didn't pardon him, but Libby isn't going to have to serve the 30 months of jail time that he had been sentenced to. Welcome to the fraternity that is our Executive branch of government (minus Dick Cheney, because he's not really part of the executive branch according to his offices).
While this certainly saves the Republicans running for office in 2008 the hassle of having to worry about the question of pardoning Libby, it's unfair to get rid of the real punishment of Libby's conviction. Bush was even quoted as saying that he respected the conviction but thought the sentence was too extreme. Obviously he did not respect the conviction because he circumvented the real punishment that the conviction resulted in. Sure there's the 2 years probation and 250,000 dollar fine, but that's not 30 months in prison like it was supposed to be.
So, in light of all of this, I would like to congratulate Bush on handing the 2008 elections to the Democrats, again. You've continued to do things that screw your party out of having any hope of winning a major election in the near future. And any hope your brother Jeb had of ever running for President is gone. Way to stick it to the family. Ass.
