Ok, I know that this is long over-due, but I've been trying to think of what to say. Ok...here goes. Go see Sideways! Yes, the movie that nobody had heard of but got nominated for all of those Oscars (the Oscars that nobody watched), is quite amazing. Now, I haven't had a chance to read the book yet, but it is on my list, and if it's half as good as the movie, then it will be well worth the money. But enough of that.
Sideways is in some ways a buddy movie, and in other ways, a movie of self-discovery by the main character Miles (played by Paul Giamatti). Miles and his best friend Jack (Thomas Haden Church of Wings fame/noteriety) are in wine-country California celebrating Jack's last week as a bachelor before getting married. The movie follows the adventures, mis-adventures, and general trouble that they find while consuming an obscene amount of wine.
While I don't want to ruin the movie for you, and really anything beyond what I've said here will do just that for you, I do want to give two warnings. First of all, after this movie you will more than likely want to drink a bottle or two of wine. That's ok. Secondly, there will be full-frontal male nudity, and not by anything that could even be construed as an attractive man.
Sideways does seem to lag at points, but the dialog is great, the acting is superb, and the writer's have obviously done their homework on wine, and Paul Giamatti does an excellent job of coming across as a wine expert. I highly recommend this movie to any and all.
